the interview

okay, I've had some requests by email and in the comments to give a bit more detail on the interview I had on Thursday.

First - Yes, still in the government. In fact, still in one of the two ministries I work for right now.

Second - Yes, still in Toronto.

Third - Not a promotion, a lateral move. Just something I'm really interested in.

I won't know anything about the results of this for at least a couple of weeks. It felt fine, but government interviews are really really hard to gauge. I didn't embarass myself, I know one of the people on the interview panel, and I won't be avoiding her in the future out of shame...

The job is in a brand new unit, so I get to be somewhere from the very begining, which is very exciting for me.

That said, I'm pretty happy where I am and the idea of leaving is kind of sad, so really, if get it, or if I don't, they are both good outcomes...

sober and wired

okay, tonight I'm stone-cold sober, but I'm also wired.

Which isn't great, because it is not going to mean great things for my interview tomorrow.

Nonetheless, send positive vibes to the Bay and Wellesley area around 11am eastern tomorrow...

*fingers crossed*

Interview stress

I have an interview on Thursday.

I really want the job. Kind of. I think.

The thing is, I actually really like my job. And I'm pretty happy here right now, I've started learning a lot again, which is really exciting.

And really, the idea of moving, bleh, that sucks.

But on the other hand, this other job, the one I have an interview for on Thursday, it sounds amazing! It's a job full of communicating and consulting people. It's about doing needs assessments and figuring out how to meet the needs you discover.

It's about people.

I like people.

I'm good with people.

You might say I'm a people person.

So, this job, well, it could be perfect for me.

But I kind of want to stay where I am for a bit because I'm learning some really exciting stuff right now.

Where is all this going? I have no idea. I'm going to go to the interview. I'm going to do my best. And if I get offered the job, I'm probably going to take it. If I don't get offered the job I get to stay somewhere I'm learning lots. It's pretty much a win-win situation.

But still, I seem to be scared shitless. ;)

the joys of staying home...

So, for the last couple weeks we have stayed home from our country house. We have spent our weekends in the city, foregoing the country for breakfast at our old regular haunt, and of course, a trip to Canada's Wonderland.

I have to say, it's been kind of nice.

For a while we were going to the house every weekend, but I think that's maybe too much.

It makes things feel a bit frenetic.

Plus, it makes it not feel special going to the country house anymore.

So, I think we're going to aim for every second weekend in the coming months.

Who knows, maybe that will change, we'll have to see, but there is a certain appeal to being in the city on the weekend. ;)

Actually, possibly a perfect solution would be the country during the week, the city on the weekend. Oh. Wait. Jobs. Right. I remember now...

post-coital cigarettes

first let me say - sorry mum, feel free to skip this entry.

And then let me say - somehow the film-noir appeal of a post-coital cigarette is lost when your partner has to go outside to smoke it.

The end.

Cats and heartache

It seems that it is almost time to say good bye to one of my cats.

She is around 21, which makes her about 100 years old in human terms.

She's been in my life since I was 10. I have lived more of my life with her than I have without her.

I live in terror of coming home and finding her dead, but at the same time I hope and pray for her to die quietly in her sleep.

I don't want to make the decision.

But it feels closer with every day.

I remember when we had to have our other cat put down (stomach cancer) and I was so worried that I'd make the wrong decision and that I wouldn't know when. Everyone just kept saying to me 'you'll know when', but I didn't believe them.

But it was true. I knew when.

Now I'm going through the same thing again, filled with doubt and worry, and I'm having a hard time accessing that memory, the once that would reassure me that I *will* know when.

Anyway, for now I'm just kind of sad. But the truth is, she's lived a very good, very long kitty life. She may not be able to pluck bats out of the air anymore, but I can certainly still tell stories about her doing it.

Not sure what the point of this way, just, well, you know, bleh...

What I learned at Canada's Wonderland

1. I will never again go to an amusement park in the summer (We rode several rides 3 times in a row. 3 times is the most though, because by the 3rd time it's not quite as exciting, you need to give your body a break so that it forgets what's in store, so you just go to another ride and ride it 3 times, then back to the original one and ride it for the 4th to 6th time and so on)

2. Even though I haven't been to Canada's Wonderland in 10 years, I still remember where rides are.

3. Did I mention about never going in the summer again? I went on 5 times more rides thanI have ever done before, and was there for less time.

4. If you order your tickets online they are way less than paying at the gate, and yet they are still expensive ($35ish instead of $55) - all in all it makes for an expensive day, since it's $70 plus tax to get in for two people, and then it's $6 for a hotdog, $3.50 for a pop, etc etc. I guess that's why we used to take picnics.

5. Late in the season the ride operators get punchy and start flirting with each other over the ride annoucment loud speakers, another reason to go in October.

To sum up - when going to an amusment park, a fall visit includes far more amusement.

WE'RE GOING TO WONDERLAND!!!!!!

Okay, so apparently I'm actually 8.

John and I are going to Canada's Wonderland tomorrow and I'm totally excited. I'm jumping around saying things like "lets go to bed right now because then it will be tomorrow and tomorrow we go to WONDERLAND!!!"

So, you know, I may be silly, but I'm going to have a damn good time tomorrow.

For the record, John's into it too, today he said "lets get there right at 10 tomorrow morning!"

For anyone who knows John they will know that if he is advocating an early (yes, that's early for him) start then he *must* be excited.

thanksgiving...

I can attest that what makes cooking thanksgiving dinner more fun is a full bottle of wine and a middle of the night call to your mum in France.

Just in case anyone was wondering...

No, really, I really really really really really want one.

Can I have one please??!?!?!?!?

turkey

so, we're hosting thanksgiving dinner at our country house on Sunday.

I'm pretty excited.

Except that a) the smallest fresh turkey available is in around 16lbs and b) I have never roasted a turkey, I haven't a clue what I'm doing.

Oh well. It's all about the adventure, right?

And, I'm making it in the 'big George' rotisserie, so it's bound to be good. ;)

Not sure what I'm going to do as the main protein for the vegetarians, I might just cook up some slabs of tofu...
